24–27
About This Game
Liberty arrived at Kennesaw State as one of college football's last unbeaten teams, riding a 17-game winning streak and sitting 5-1. The Flames looked destined for victory when Kaidon Salter connected with Treon Sibley for a touchdown on their first drive, but Kennesaw State—winless on the season and desperate for its first FBS victory—refused to quit. Davis Bryson answered with a touchdown pass to Christian Moss to tie it at 7-7, and suddenly the Owls had life.
What followed was a back-and-forth offensive showcase. Michael Benefield punched in a rushing touchdown to give Kennesaw State a 14-7 lead, but Salter marched Liberty down the field to even the score at 14-14. Qua Ashley's rushing touchdown put the Owls ahead 21-14, and Colin Karhu's field goal kept the Flames in range at 21-17. Austin Welch's leg became the decisive weapon, drilling consecutive field goals to stretch Kennesaw State's lead to 27-17 with minutes remaining.
Liberty's Salter refused to let the season end without a fight, finding Elijah Canion for a 17-yard touchdown with 1:49 left to pull within three. A recovered onside kick briefly gave the Flames hope, but Kennesaw State's defense stood firm. Liberty's final prayer fell incomplete at the 35-yard line, and the upset was sealed. Kennesaw State had won its historic first FBS game, Liberty's unbeaten season was over, and this instant classic lived up to every moment of its drama.
